MySaxion

Online environment for students, teachers and staff: MySaxion

MySaxion is a fully responsive online environment where students, teachers and staff of Saxion University can find information on education and work. All information that is needed for that day can be found through the dashboard of the MySaxion portal at a glance. By making use of the new drilldown navigation all information can be found easily.

Central portal

Students, teachers and staff of Saxion University all use one portal. Over the years, this portal has grown to be a versatile environment. Everything is available in one place: from grades to schedules, from links to applications to important news items. The Saxion University portal serves as a clear starting point for many different groups, but it was lacking in usability, causing the number of active users to drop leaving the university without a central communication platform.

The goal of the project is to improve the usability for all users through a consistent interface. It should be easy for users to find the specific information that they need at that moment.

To identify the user groups and take into account the extremes, TRIMM, in cooperation with Saxion, developed four personas.  Amongst other things, the IT expertise level was set for each persona and the five main functions, the so called ‘top tasks’ were identified.

The starting point for the development of MySaxion is to ensure each persona can easily and quickly find the relevant information without personalization.

Responsive web application

The result of the Agile process that lasted six months is a completely responsive web application, which is designed and build for mobile, tablet and desktop. Through user research the design has been gradually optimized to better suit the needs of students, lecturers and staff.

The new MySaxion provides each user in his or her most important needs. After logging in, the user ends up on the ‘day view’, the dashboard. Here, the different user groups find the five most used features. Every feature contains a matching component with current information that can be folded or unfolded as desired. There is also a calendar view on the right side where all items for that day are displayed.

To structure the information better a new type of navigation, the drilldown menu, has been introduced. To support the navigation, MySaxion features a breadcrumb, giving insight on how the various levels in the menu were navigated. It also features an extensive search functionality.

The MySaxion platform has many external tools integrated and it serves as a starting point. The menu gives users quick access to the applications, for example the schedule or the marks/grades. MySaxion also shows information from the external tools in the dashboard.

Seeking the constant feedback from both customers and end users has ensured that not only the result fits in well with the wishes of the customer, but especially to the end users needs. The result is a product that is used daily by 26,179 students, 1,733 teachers and 1,185 staff members.
